Some attribute it to the Etruscan family of the Saina, others to the Roman family of the Saenii. It is certain that it developed greatly in the Middle Ages, when the town expanded in the direction of three nuclei which later became known as the "terziari": the historical center of the city , San Martino and Camollia. In 1348 , however, Siena was brought to its knees by the plague, like an earthquake that wiped out three fifths of the population. With its magnificent Gothic buildings, Siena is a jewel of world renown.
